At Change Happens Foundation, we believe that meaningful change comes from innovative solutions to pressing challenges. That’s why we’re proud to support the Food Rescue Program led by WPE, a zero-waste organization making a remarkable impact in the Bay Area.
Did you know that if just one-third of the excess food currently ending up in U.S. landfills were redirected, we could feed the entire nation—with plenty to spare? This staggering statistic highlights not only a profound issue but also an incredible opportunity to combat food insecurity and environmental waste simultaneously.
WPE is seizing this opportunity with a dedicated team of 17 staff members and over 700 regular volunteers. They partner with grocery stores and restaurants to collect food nearing its expiration date—perfectly good food that would otherwise be discarded due to strict retail standards. Volunteers meticulously inspect each item, composting anything unsuitable, and ensure that high-quality food reaches those who need it most.
Through their tireless efforts, WPE redirects nutritious food to over 160,000 unique individuals currently facing poverty. That’s 160,000 lives touched, meals provided, and futures brightened—all while reducing the harmful methane emissions associated with food waste in landfills.
Their work is a shining example of how we can address multiple critical issues with a single, thoughtful approach. By fighting hunger and reducing waste, WPE is not only feeding people but also fostering a more sustainable and compassionate community.
Our foundation’s mission aligns seamlessly with WPE’s vision. By supporting their Food Rescue Program, we’re investing in a solution that turns potential waste into hope and sustenance. It’s about more than just providing meals; it’s about nurturing a healthier planet and a more equitable society.
We invite you to join us in celebrating and supporting the incredible work of WPE. Together, we can transform excess into abundance, waste into nourishment, and challenges into opportunities for lasting change.
